Sam Horino

Sam Horino was born in Gardena, California and was a student of judo, earning his third degree black belt. When soldiers came to expel him from his family home in Hollywood, Horino passively resisted and made two soldiers link hands and carry him out to the front porch where he walked to the bus that took him to a temporary detention center.

Horino was about 29 when he stepped forward as one of the steering committee leaders of the Fair Play Committee and was tried with them for conspiracy to counsel draft evasion. His younger brother Min was one of the resisters in the mass trial.

After the war Horino returned to residential gardening, forming many close relationships with his customers. He lives in retirement in Monterey Park, California.
